Wildside Fencing
Ecology News 03 March 2011

Frankley, Birmingham

Wildside was involved with moving badgers from along a reservoir supporting bank to an area of woodland. Badger fencing and gates were constructed to keep the badgers from specific areas and then a new set was constructed on the outskirts of woodland.

Bat boxes

Through our specialist tree climbers, bat boxes can be installed at suitable heights within trees as part of temporary/permanent mitigation. They can erect boxes on trees out of reach with lifting platforms and ladders and create the required ‘drop zone’ for the bats with appropriate pruning.

Wixams

Wildside are involved with clearing the vegetation on this 400 Hectare site in Bedfordshire. The site supports populations of reptiles, amphibians, bats, barn owls and ground nesting birds as well as other bird species. Timing of the clearance was critical and was undertaken from autumn to spring to minimise works within the nesting bird season. Potential hibernacula areas were marked  out and no works with machinery or that involved disturbing the ground were undertaken in these areas whilst the reptiles/amphibians were in hibernation. Hibernacula have also been constructed within an area of retained habitat.

A14

As part of a communications upgrade the entire length of the A14 was subject to the construction of message signs and cables. The road runs through SSSI’s, SAC’s, Local Nature Reserves, watercourses and has areas of acid and neutral grassland along the verges, all of which require careful working methods. Badgers, bats, reptiles/amphibians, birds were also present along the route. During construction Wildside undertook vegetation clearance along the verges including transplanting orchids and translocating areas of acid grassland for temporary storage before relaying once construction works were complete. Vegetation manipulation had to be undertaken where water voles were present along watercourses but also along verges where reptiles were present. This enabled the works to go ahead without the need for extensive fencing.

B.F.I. Gaydon 10 September 2010
Wildside have been on Site at the British Film Institue in Gaydon providing about a 1000m of Newt Fencing.

This is one of Wildside's more local jobs, being set in the countryside of Warwickshire, working closely with the local Ecologists to keep up the protection of the native's protected species.
